Treatment

Shockwave Therapy

Acoustic-wave therapy applied to a targeted soft tissue area, used as one part of a care plan rather than on its own.

What it is

Shockwave therapy uses a handheld device to deliver acoustic pulses through the skin to a specific area, such as a tendon or a tight band of muscle. It does not involve electricity passing through the body or any incision.

Patients commonly describe a tapping sensation. Some areas can feel tender during or after a session, and intensity can be adjusted.

Where it fits

  • Considered for some persistent soft tissue and tendon complaints
  • Usually combined with exercise and other care rather than used alone
  • Discussed only after Dr. Caruso evaluates the area
